The FCA welcomes FREYR
The Fair Cobalt Alliance welcomes FREYR, a developer of clean, next-generation battery cell production, as the latest industry player to join the FCA and recognise the legitimacy of cobalt from responsible ASM operations.
Joining Amperex Technology Limited and BritishVolt, our existing battery manufacturer members, FREYR plans to develop up to 43 GWh of capacity in Northern Norway by 2025, becoming one of Europe’s largest battery cell suppliers.
Capitalising on Norway’s ample supply of low-cost renewable energy, FREYR is committed to reducing CO2 emissions across the value chain of battery cell manufacturing, and is seeking to produce batteries with the world’s lowest lifecycle carbon footprint.
As part of these ambitions, FREYR has collaborated with fellow FCA member Glencore on a contract for the supply of up to 1,500 metric tons of high grade, sustainably sourced cobalt metal cut cathodes made from partially recycled cobalt produced at Glencore’s Nikkelverk facility in Norway.
At the FCA, we believe that a truly sustainable battery value chain encompasses both people and planet, and must start with component materials such as cobalt, so we welcome FREYR’s collaborative vision and commitment to ethical sourcing.
“We are undergoing a major energy transition, moving from fossil fuels to battery-powered technology. Cobalt is one of the essential components in the battery production and we are focused on sustainable supply of cobalt to support our production of clean, low-cost and low-carbon battery cells for a better planet,” said Tom Einar Jensen, the CEO of FREYR. “This alliance is an important arena for us to drive impact by investing in empowering the people working in the artisanal mines, as well as the communities around them.”
